Master of Science in Media Technology - MMT
Short description
Effective communication with costumers, network and the government is necessary for companies, the industry and organizations to succeed. This flood of information contains pictures, sound, print and web sites on the Internet, mostly digital. Master of Science in Media Technology is a study programme where students will learn to master many of the technologies needed in digital media. The students will become a important resource both for the traditional media industry, but also for companies and organizations that want to take advantage of digital media.
Duration
The study programme is a two years (120 ECTS) postgraduate programme leading to a Master's degree. Students with a engineering degree from bachelor level will get the degree Master of Technology in Media Technology if they choose mathematics as one of the electives. Everyone else will get the degree Master of Science in Media Technology. The study programme qualifies for PhD studies.
Expected learning outcomes
The programme will give students advanced level knowledge and experience in the integration and use of technologies and tools used for producing, filing, and distributing digital media. In addition, the students will gain an overall understanding of the processes being used to produce new as well as old media products. The programme is largely focused on computer science and media/graphic arts technologies, but the students will also get a good understanding of the media industry and its challenges (organisational, economic, legal, etc.). The students will specialise in at least one area of media technology through elective subjects and their work on projects and the final Master's thesis.
After completing the programme, the students will possess skills in using technologies and tools for digital media. The students will specifically have deep knowledge of technologies that enable production, processing, distribution, and retrieval of digital media.
The students will develop good work attitudes and ethics that put the users' and society's needs first when choosing or developing technologies and tools for the digital media.
Internationalization
The study programme admits international full time students and accepts exchange students for one or two semesters. There are good cooperation with universities in Germany, The Czech Republic, Spain, Sweden, Finland and France, but also with universities in United Kingdom, Canada and United States. The students are encouraged to take a semester in a foreign university and will get help and advice in where and when.
Target Group
The study programme is aiming to recruit graduated bachelor’s in media technology, informatics or similar, but other background can also be interesting, especially people with interest or experience in development, integration and use of digital media systems.
Admission Criteria
Applicants must have a 3-year undergraduate degree to qualify for admission, preferably a bachelor's degree in computer science or a bachelor's degree in graphic arts engineering, informatics or media technology. The applicants must document that they have at least 60 ECTS credits in information technology/computing subjects (of which at least 10 ECTS credits in databases, data modelling, and/or information modelling) and at least 10 ECTS credits in mathematics.
Course Structure
The first year of the study programme will give the students a basic understanding of media technology and media knowledge. They will learn the principles for production, use and storage of digital text, images, sound and video. They will learn about development of components in media technology and how these can be integrated in complete systems for archiving, retrieval and deliverance of digital media. The students will also get knowledge in how to evaluate the consequences in organisations and the society when using media technology and keeping up with the fast evolvement. The second year of study the students will get to specialise in one or two media technology related topics and can choose from a wide range of elective courses. The last semester is devoted to the master’s thesis.
More information about the different courses can be found on the web pages for the Faculty of Computer Science and Media Technology.
