Short description

Information technology permeates all aspects of society and has become critical to industry, government, and individual well-being.

Securing these vital services and structures and the availability of trustworthy information whenever and wherever it is required has become both an area of intensive research and also of burgeoning commercial activity. A master of science in information security will provide the students with the knowledge and theoretical background as well as with the requisite skills and attitudes to succeed in this challenging yet eminently rewarding field.

Duration

This is a two-year master program (120 ECTS credits) which is also possible to complete on a three year schedule as a part-time student. The degree awarded upon completion is “Master of Science in Information Security”.
The program qualifies students to proceed to PhD studies.

Expected learning outcomes

The program offers a wide range of courses, both technical modules and modules dealing with social, legal and management aspects. By the end of the second year of this programme, the students will be proficient, not only in the relevant technology, but also in the social and legal aspects of information technology security. This involves knowledge in topics like confidentiality, integrity and ease of access to information. Through a master's thesis, the students will deepen their knowledge in at least one professional field in the practical or theoretical information technology sector.

Internationalization

There will be several opportunities for traveling abroad to do the master thesis (agreements with selected universities will be signed in 2007).

Target Group

There are two focus groups for this study program:

1.Full-time international and national students that have completed a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related subject

2.Part-time students from both public and private sector working with technology or management issues related to information security

Admission Criteria

Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related subject to qualify for admission.

The applicants must document that they have at least 10 ECTS credits in mathematics/statistics and at least 60 ECTS credits in computer science subjects.An additional 4 points will be awarded for completed masters program in computer science or a related subject and 1 point (up to a maximum of 4) will be given for each documented year of full time employment within information security.

A grade point average of C is required.

Course Structure

The program has two different course structures shown below. For full-time students (or part-time students with much past experience in information security) the two years consist of a first year with all mandatory courses (50/50 technology and management courses) and a second year with electives and a master thesis. For part-time students the same course structure is divided over three years with 20 credits each semester except for the fourth semester where students only have do 10 credits (optional additional independent study).
