There is an increasing understanding for, and for the use of, design in Norwegian industry. Increased globalization, access to the same methods of production and processes has created the same opportunities for all to produce equally good technical products. Design is the way to make a product stand out, and this has made design one of the most important competition and marketing tools for the future.
Contents of the study
By the end of the study the candidates will have achieved a basic knowledge of:
- Interface design with a basis in design theory (the link between man and machine, ergonomics)
- Creative problem solving (the creative thinking process, finding the best solutions, attitudes etc.)
- The product as a communications medium (the identity of both the product and the company)
- Idea and concept development (the contexts for which the product is intended)
- The choice of materials/solutions (value analysis, functions testing, stress calculation, structural surface treatment, HMS, reuse/recycling aluminium as material for design etc.)
- Checking functionality against the requirement
- The use of software in the process of design (Software Design Tools: 3D modelling, 3D animation, element calculation (FEM) and also software within communication, presentation and demonstration)
- Production techniques and control
- Software simulation of production processes
- Culture and community (the ability to make the product culturally and socially acceptable)
- Project management in the practical process of design (Entrepreneurial thinking, project planning, project management, quality assurance, processing, project evaluation)
- Rapid Prototyping, reverse engineering, 3D digitalisation
- Designing, verification, laboratory testing, easily maintainable design
Students on this course have the chance to develop the courage, self-confidence, collaborative skills and process understanding to be able to realise their own ideas.
