Jungle

Otto Trodal Øksnevad (f.v), Gaute Borgenholt og Trond Isak Alseth

The students Otto Trodal Øksnevad (from left), Gaute Borgenholt and Trond Isak Alseth create networks with insecure computers which will be exposed to different attack scenarios such as virus and hacking. The system they are setting up will be used in teaching within data security.

The three students are in their last year in Bachelor of Science in Network and system administration at Gjøvik University College (GUC), and the setup with insecure computers is a part of their bachelor thesis. –There is an increasing attention to security of computers in the society. The system we creates will make it easy to setup computers with the vulnerabilities you want, so you can test networks and secure them better. Vulnerabilities may for instance be old and outdated software and operating system.

The bachelor thesis is named ”Jungle”. –A jungle is a dangerous place to be, and you can say the same about a network with unsecured computers! This is an exciting thesis with technical challenges, says Otto, Gaute and Trond Isak.

The system they are creating is open for downloads and are primary made for students as themselves, who will be able to learn more about attack scenarios. –In practical terms you must create a virtual copy of the computer and then you can test it for various vulnerabilities. Your own computer will not be attacked that way, but a copy and you will be able to test the security.

Their bachelor thesis is in the core of what system administration and networking is all about – Administration of networks and computer systems is about getting systems to interact with each others. You see the effect of what you do and everything is constantly evolving, says the three students.
