12, 5 tonnes of paper equivalent to 150 trees are being printed at GUC each year. This calls for actions, several are now being effectuated.
-We have an enormous consumption of paper at Gjøvik University College. For starters, to save both money and the environment, we now have enrolled 15 multi-function printers. They have already replaced 67 printers. This action alone means that we save 150 000 kWh of electricity each year, says IT manager Stian Husemoen (photo). - In addition, we save maintenance
costs.
With the introduction of multi-function printers, students and staff now will have to use their student or employee card when printing. – Feedback from students we have talked to is overwhelming. They point out, among other benefits, that there is less chaos. They no longer have to search for their printout among other printout. In addition, we reduce waste and prints that are never collected, says Husemoen.
The goal is to halve the printout at GUC within the next two years. Till now, 2,5 million pages are being printed each year. - We will gradually combine this initiative with the introduction of quotas. This is a more extensive process that must be carried out in close collaboration with the students, Husemoen emphasizes. Further more, another important process is also how to make everyday life easier by using electronic submissions, archives and e-readers. - Most people prefer to print what they want to read, maybe e-readers can help reduce that sort of use. The IT-departement is now testing different e-readers. There are exciting things in the market, Husemoen concludes.
