Free software prize

Øyvind KolåsThe award winner Øyvind Kolås is a former student and employee at GUC. The jury's opinion states: - The winner has for several years contributed to the development of free software, and excels in the combination of programming and visual arts.

The prize for the promotion of free software is distributed each year to a person, group or company that has excelled in efforts on free software and / or open standards. For the first time this year a single individual won the price. In addition, it was also for the first time awarded to a municipality, this year Kongsberg municipality. The prize is awarded by the Norwegian Unix user, Oslo University College and Friprogsenteret (National Center for free software).

- The prize is important because in this way, the development of free software becomes the centre of attention, and the issues of copyright are more known, says Kolås (pictured). - It also generates extra motivation for further work, he adds.

Kolås won the prize for promotion of free software because of his (among others) contributions to the Image Manipulation Program GIMP. The jury also highlights his contributions as an architect and the maintaining of GEGL, an image processing framework. GUC has often cooperative research efforts with Kolås – and congratulate on the award!
