Best paper award
Doctoral research fellow Gabriele Simone and associate professor Ivar Farup were awarded the price for the best paper at the CGIV conference in Amsterdam earlier in May.
The article, «Spatio-Temporal Retinex-like Envelope with Total Variation» is based on a mathematical algorithm called STRESS, which mimics many of the characteristics of the human visual system. The article improves the method of calculation to get even better and more realistic images.
Simone and Farup are employed at the Colorlab at Gjøvik University College. The article is part of Simone's doctoral work.
A common tool in image editing systems is contrast enhancement, which is generally performed on the whole image (global). The STRESS-algorithm enhances both local and global contrast, providing greater details in the image. This done through the calculation of the so called «envelopes».
In the article, «Spatio-Temporal Retinex-like Envelope with Total Variation» Simone and Farup have found a more efficient and faster method to calculate these envelopes to get even better quality images.
Congratulations with the best paper award!
