Generally, you do not need permission if you want to cite a small part of a text, e.g. a quotation from a book, one verse of a poem etc. If you want to cite a larger part of a work, e.g. an entire poem, you need permission from the publisher/author in order to use it in your paper. You can usually contact the author directly or through the marketing department at the publisher. The exception is if it is 70 years or longer since the author died. Then the work is freed and you can cite, e.g. the entire "Peer Gynt" without permission.
When it comes to images, graphs, figures etc. you need the author/publisher`s permission. You can often find images that has socalled CreativeCommons licences online. If you use such images, make sure that you operate within the limits of the licence (most often, you just need to cite the originator. GUC has also bought access to a stock photo service called Colourbox where all contents are available for download and use. If you want to read more on copyright and use, please see www.clara.no
