Best Master`s Thesis

Both prize winners (pictured) appreciate the help and guidance from the supervisors, and the fact that the Master's program was well organized. - I have a child with autism, and my topic came naturally when I understood that I could write about autism in the field of media technology, says Bjørnar Rudsengen. He works as a teacher, and has also worked full time while he was studying as well. - My thesis deals with a very relevant but difficult subject. It was also very relevant to my new job as an IT auditor in Oslo, says Liubov Kokorina. There is no doubt that both prize winners like a challenge.

Kokorina`s thesis is called ”The Use of Frequent Episodes in Intrusion Detection”. The idea was to use a statistical frequent episode discovery method known to be efficient in testing errors in telecommunication systems in a new application field – that of Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS). IDS automatically detect attacks against computer networks and hosts.

– Kokorina managed to build an efficient and accurate system based only on such a simple idea as that of the discovery of frequent episodes, tells supervisor Slobodan Petrovic. - Her work obtained the best mark in the process of international evaluation, in which one of the renowned experts in application of pattern recognition techniques in intrusion detection was involved.

"Sensitivity for Instructions, viewing Social Scenes in Static Images, among Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders" is the title of Bjørnar Rudsengens thesis. The topic has had a lot of research focus within several research disciplines: How persons with the diagnose Autism Spectre Disorders deviates from others in viewing and understanding social settings.

- The project was unusually large, with demanding and large data collection and analyses. The research questions were anchored to existing research, and when the thesis also was well written, the external examiner was never in doubt that it deserved an A, tells supervisor Frode Volden.
