Advanced Course in Mobile Technology

On the basis of

Background in programming (C++, Java, Objective-C). User Interface design. Signal and image processing.

Expected learning outcomes

At the end of the course students shall possess specialized knowledge and skills:

  • Understand a range of advanced mobile techniques
  • Possesses specialized insights into research frontier in a selected part of the mobile technology field
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of professional and scientific theory and methodologies related to mobile technologies
  • Have developed a deep understanding of one area of advanced mobile technology


  • Be able to describe and present the use of mobile technologies
  • Be able to analyze existing theories, methods, and interpretations and to challenge established knowledge and practices
  • Be able to discuss the ethical and social impacts of new mobile technologies

  • Have a improved ability to discuss technology and defend an opinion
  • Be able to communicate academic issues, analysis, and conclusions, with specialists in the field, in oral and written forms


As the field of mobile technology is dynamic and changes rapidly, the specific technologies covered will change each year.
The current coverage includes, but is not limited to:

  • Location-based tracking and location-aware applications
  • Sensors and activity tracking (accelerometer/gyro, microphone, EEG-based, and others)
  • Signal processing
  • Quantified self, self-monitoring and activity tracking
  • Camera-based & video-based lifelogging, video-enabled wearable technologies
  • Social aspects, social connectivity
  • Context: acquisition, processing, and data mining
  • Mobile games
  • Mobile health, personalized healthcare
  • Mobile application development & mobile ecosystems
  • Mobile business models, entrepreneurship and monetization

Various advanced topics will be presented and discussed in this course. Students will investigate in-depth one of the research topics. Students will also read and present journal and conference papers on advanced mobile technologies.

Portfolio Assessment

Form(s) of Assessment (additional text)

Portfolio counts for 60% and oral exam counts for 40%. Students are expected to write an individual report on a specific mobile research topic and perform a presentation to the class about the technology that they have investigated. The students can either present a prototype or conduct a thorough literature review for the report. The internal portfolio will contain at least a report and the presentation. It may contain additional elements such as preliminary user study results, prototype implementation, data collection, or others. All of this work is individual unless permission is given to work on a larger topic as a group. Without the presentation the student will not pass the portfolio. The oral exam will cover all the topics covered in the course, including all the presentations and discussions from other students.

External/internal examiner

Internal with periodic external examiner. First time with external examiner is autumn 2016.

Re-sit examination

Re-sit examination for the oral exam in August.

Teaching Materials

Publications and relevant teaching materials are available on Fronter page for the course. It is highly advisable for students to own their own Android or iOS smartphones and/or relevant wearable technologies.

Additional information

This is a agile course which will focus on new and emerging technologies. The individual topics may change if there is a significant new technology available at the start of the course.
Preregistration in Fronter is necessary to ensure that the course is offered. The course will not run if less than five students have pre-registered by August 20.
