Short description

Since the mid-1990s, web development has been one of the fastest growing industries in the world. Growth in the industry pushed forward by large businesses wishing to sell products and services, but also because of the automation of workflow and Web-based services. Previously, these were only available as applications installed locally on each computer, but with the development of Web-based services have been created new methods of communication and facilitating decentralized information and media distribution. Users will increasingly be less dependent on a particular workstation to access and work with their programs.

Web development is a broad term that includes all activities in preparation of sites for the World Wide Web, or similar platforms. This can include e-commerce, business development, design, content production, client-and server-side scripting, web server, media convergence and the development of the interface on mobile devices and is based entirely on one form of media technology. Web development can range from the creation of a static single page of plain text to the most complex web-based internet applications, electronic businesses, business-critical solutions, or social network services.


The study programme is a three years, 180 ECTS, fulltime, undergraduate education. The study programme leads to the degree Bachelor in Web Development.

Expected learning outcomes


Graduates will have broad knowledge of development and maintenance of web and mobile solutions, publishing and visual presentation of a wide range of platforms and technologies and development processes and methods in media and information technology. They should know the research and development within the field of web development and to update and further develop both their theoretical knowledge and practical skills in developing solutions for various web and mobile platforms and technologies. The candidate should also have knowledge of web technology history, traditions, character and place in society.

Candidates should study through the subjects use the knowledge to develop solutions for the web platform and relevant results from research and development of practical and theoretical issues and make informed choices. They should be able to reflect on their professional practice and adjust this under guidance and be able to locate, assess and refer to information and technical material and present it so that it sheds light on an issue. Candidates should also be able to master the technical tools, techniques and forms of expression relevant to work in IT-based development projects.

General qualifications:
Qualified Web Developers will gain insight into current issues surrounding copyright, authentication, data security and information flow. They should be able to plan and carry out varied tasks and projects that extend over time, alone and in groups, and in line with ethical requirements and guidelines. They should be able to convey the central subject matter which theories, issues and solutions both in writing, orally and through the various media web technologies can be utilized used in. They should be able to exchange views and experiences with others with backgrounds in web and mobile development and thereby contribute to the development of good practice.

The rapid development and constant change within the field of web development research requires in addition that the candidates know about innovation and innovation processes

Bachelor in web development qualifies for admission to the Master Program in Interaction Design at Gjøvik University College. Students who meet the special admission requirements (Mathematics R1) and prioritize certain technical electives, would also be able to qualify for admission to Master in Applied Computer Science at Gjøvik University College. Students who find this interesting are encouraged to seek a student adviser or the Programme Coordinator, for guidance. Other IT and media-based master's degree studies could also be relevant, depending on the depth projects and electives chosen.

Completed course will qualify for work with web technical solutions and production:

  • web, mobile and multimedia development companies
  • publishing, newspapers, radio, television and graphical
  • companies developing interactive software
  • other companies that work with the production of media, mobile and web related products.


The courses are normally taught in Norwegian. Some of the lectures may be in English. The students can take an exchange semester at a foreign university. The program has a good cooperation with universities, particularly in Germany and Sweden, but it will be possible to exchange to universities in Australia, UK, USA, France, Spain and Austria also. It is easiest to get to the exchange in the second and third year of study.

Target Group

The study programme is suitable for anyone with an interest in learning the development of solutions for web and mobile devices. There are no requirements for special skills in data in advance, since it accumulated gradually during the study. The course is suitable for both students coming straight from high school and applicants for some years in the workplace has become interested in developing Web-based solutions.

Course Structure

The program is structured with some core subjects that are compulsory for all students. In addition, select students in the third year specialization area of ​​their elective courses and the Bachelor's thesis, which extends throughout the past semester.

The first two semesters are composed with the intent to give students a broad understanding of and insight into the different technologies and methods for developing web solutions. In the third and fourth semester will focus more in depth within web related technologies and development methods. In addition, the superstructure projects start up. In the last academic year the students the opportunity to immerse themselves in self-selected areas relevant to web development. Bachelor project is entirely initiated by the student, and demands for independence. The projects are usually implemented with an external client. This can give students an opening to the labor market, both because the project focuses on relevant issues, and because students with good references are given priority by the companies.

Web technologies and development methods
In order to create functional web solutions require the candidate knowledge of the basic technology for communication and publishing, programming solutions at different levels, understanding and experience in building web and mobile solutions on both the client and server side, understanding the user and their needs and ability to satisfy its requirements, information structures, databases, advanced web technology and the ability to create a functioning, graphic design.

Media and media convergence
Different media and communication channels is melting more and more together. Candidates need therefore insight into and understanding of how to develop and distribute text, images, audio and video in multiple dimensions and to reflect on the media's role in modern society.

Engineering, project management and market orientation
Candidates should know different ways to add up the system development and have good knowledge in the preparation of the requirement specification. In addition, students acquire knowledge about the basic elements of project management and planning, organizing and implementing projects.

Cap stone projects, electives and specialization
Here, students have the opportunity to solve several practical problems based on the knowledge they have gained in addition to resource lectures within the time relevant topics. The products developed in the topics of building projects gathered in a folder that grade is the end of the study. During these four semesters, students across the different topics also get good insight into the legal aspects, focusing on the user, user-friendly solutions and the media's role in modern society.
Students will be able to combine the knowledge they acquire in the various topics. They must master different tools, and be able to produce solutions to various web development levels. They will also be able to criticize their own work. In selecting the subjects given the candidate the opportunity to specialize in different areas of web development such as game development, information, marketing. The same candidate can do in the final bachelor thesis which must be planned and carried out a major, independent, self-chosen task of interdisciplinary and scientific nature, propose solutions and document these. In the superstructure projects, students will develop pre-defined web solutions, preferably related to the real web development projects for companies cooperating with the study. These products are collected in a folder that follows the student through the study and the grade is the end of the study period. The projects can be continuously changed and improved.
As elective courses, students are recommended one of the three following directions:

  • The choice of topics in finance or project management. These courses are not mandatory in the study, but contains topics that are important to understand the various choices that must be made in connection with the planning and implementation of a production. Most students will get jobs that involve a project manager or manager position. Understanding of such markets, projects and finances will be a prerequisite
  • Focusing on the production and content, select subjects that develop understanding and skills in everything from video production to game, text and image processing.
  • Specialization within the specific areas of web development areas. This may be different areas of information, or to go deeper into the software development.

The pedagogics in the study program is based on lectures in addition to different methods such as practical exercises, project work, theoretical exercises, laboratory work, and writing essays. Students will also participate in large multidisciplinary projects in certain topics. Learning methods can be implemented individually or in groups.
The program is linked to the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology. The conditions are set for an interesting interdisciplinary study environment with access to well equipped laboratories for paper based and electronic publishing, studios and laboratories for multimedia production, digital video, digital audio, digital photography, color science, telepresence and usability of digital media. College Library has a good selection of media technology and design professional journals.

Technical Prerequisites

Although there will be an advantage for the students to have their own PC / Mac, this is not a prerequisite. The university college is well equipped with computer laboratories.
The study program includes topics that as partly based on knowledge of digital technology used in the processing and publishing of media. There are however no assumptions that students have prior knowledge about the courses, classes start at a basic level that allows everyone to be able to acquire the same knowledge base.
