Digital Workflow System Development

Expected learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course, the student will know the characteristics of a typical workflow and its stages. The students will also have knowledge about common file-types and their characteristics.
The students will be able to plan, design, and implement workflow chains that process and transmit and publish file-based data. The students will also be able to use common open-source tools to transport, transform, transcode and publish data and metadata within files.
After successfully completing the course, the students should be able to actively participate in system development projects

The course will be offered both as an ordinary campus course and as a course that is offered in a flexible way to off-campus students. Lecture notes, e-lectures and other types of e-learning material will be offered through an Fronter. Communication between the teachers and the students, and among the students, will be facilitated through the Fronter.

The evaluation consists of two parts:

  1. Written exam, 60%.
  2. Final project report, 40%. The final report will need to include a discussion about the project findings, process, future improvements as well as a conclusion.

 Both parts must be passed individually

External/internal examiner

 An internal and a external examiner will evaluate both the reports and the written exam.

Re-sit examination

 Written exam: Ordinary re-sit examinations are offered. There is no re-sit examination for projects.

Coursework Requirements

The students will need to deliver a project proposal describing a self-selected project and get a passing grade to be eligible for the final exam. This pre-project report will need to include a plan, a general background and a problem statement and how it is relevant to the issues related to workflow, a description of a goal and an outline of the methods and means to be used.

The students will also be required mainly to use UNIX and related software as part of their projects.
