On completion of this course the student will be able to:

- Posses specialized insight and good understanding of the technologies, and solutions of content based indexing and retrieval.
- Possess specialized insight and good understanding of the challenges and limitations of content-based indexing and retrieval systems.
- Are able to to identify and evaluate the use of content-based features in indexing and retrieval of various types of media content (such as text, images, audio, and video).
- Possess specialized insight and good understanding of the research frontier in content based indexing and retrieval
- The student shall be able to evaluate and compare alternative content-based retrieval indexes and similarity measures.
- The student shall be experienced in designing and conducting experiments for developing, testing and evaluating content-based indexing and retrieval approaches.
- Have the learning skills to continue acquiring new knowledge and skills in a manner that is largely self-directed

Teaching Methods (additional text)
The course will be offered both as an ordinary campus course and as a course that is offered in a flexible way to off-campus students. Lecture notes, e-lectures, laboratory work, and other types of e-learning material will be offered through an Fronter. Communication between the teachers and the students, and among the students, will be facilitated by the Fronter.

- Exam counts 60%.
- Reports from the project and laboratory work counts 40%.
- Each part must be passed individually.
The students will make demonstrations for the project and the laboratory work. The campus students must be present at the demonstrations and the distant students should join the demonstrations either by Skype or by being present physically.
Alphabetical Scale, A(best) – F (fail)
Internal and external examiner evaluates the exam. Internal examiner evaluates the laboratory reports.
Written exam: ordinary re-sit examination. There is no re-sit examination for projects.
Reports from the individual laboratory assignments must be handed in no later than two weeks after the laboratory work is scheduled to take place.
