Master of Science in Media Technology - MMT
Short description
We are living in a digital media world where the web is becoming a unified distribution channel for news, professional information, maps, educational content, games, movies and videos, graphics and photos, and music delivered to computers, TVs, game consoles, or mobile phones. Master of Science in Media Technology is a computer science program where students will learn to understand and master the computer-based technologies that constitute the foundation for today's digital media world. This includes web technologies, color imaging technologies, video processing technologies, game technologies and geographical and location-based technologies. Students graduating from the program will be competent to work for the traditional media industry and for companies and organizations that want to fully utilize or develop new and compelling computer and digital media applications.
Duration
The study program is a two years' (120 ECTS) postgraduate program leading to a Master's degree. Students with engineering degrees and advanced mathematics courses from their bachelor level studies will get the degree Master of Technology in Media Technology. Other students will get the degree Master of Science in Media Technology. The study program qualifies for PhD studies.
Expected learning outcomes
After graduating, successful students have gained advanced level knowledge and experience in the integration and use of technologies and techinques used for producing, processing, analyzing, filing, and distributing digital media. In addition, the students will gain an overall understanding of the workflows and processes involved. The program is largely focused on computer science and media/graphic arts technologies, but the students will also gain understanding in the media industry and its challenges (such as innovation and organizational, economic, legal implications of the digital media technology). The students will specialize in at least one area of media technology through advanced courses and project works and elective courses and their final Master's thesis.
After completing the program, the students will possess skills in using technologies and tools for digital media. The students will specifically be knowledgable in the areas of color imaging technologies, video processing technologies, web technologies, game technologies and geographical and location-based technologies and will have advanced skills in at least one of these areas.
After completing the program, the students will be capable of discussing main questions and issues in scientific thinking and will be able to frame research problems and questions. The students will have experience in planning and conducting a scientific project and in documenting the results and scientific contributions in the form of a scientific report.
The students will develop good work attitudes and ethics that put the users' and society's needs first when choosing or developing technologies and tools for the digital media.
Internationalization
The courses are taught in english. The study programme admits international full time students and accepts exchange students for one or two semesters. There are good cooperation with universities in Germany, The Czech Republic, Spain, Sweden, Finland and France, but also with universities in United Kingdom, Canada and United States. The students are encouraged to take a semester in a foreign university and will get help and advice in where and when.
Target Group
The study program is aiming to recruit graduated bachelor’s in media technology, informatics or similar, but a different background may also be relevant, especially students with interest or experience in development, integration and use of digital media systems. There are 3 target groups:
- Undergraduate students entering the program as a continuation of their bachelor degree without any prior work experience
- Industry students (or students in private/public sector in general) looking for a part-time masters program which is flexible and can be adapted to their employers' and their own individual needs.
- International students: full-time, part-time or exchange students studying at Gjøvik University College for only single semesters
Admission Criteria
Applicants must have a 3-year undergraduate degree to qualify for admission, preferably a bachelor's degree in computer science or a bachelor's degree in graphic arts engineering, informatics or media technology. The applicants must document that they have at least 60 ECTS credits in information technology/computing subjects (of which at least 10 ECTS credits in databases, data modeling, and/or information modeling) and at least 10 ECTS credits in mathematics.
Course Structure
The first year of the study program will give the students a basic understanding of media technology and media management. They will learn the principles for production, use and storage of digital text, images, sound and video. They will learn about development of components in media technology and how these can be integrated in complete systems for archiving, retrieval and deliverance of digital media. The students will also get knowledge in how to evaluate the consequences in organizations and the society when using media technology and keeping up with the fast evolvement.
The second year of study the students will work with indexing and retrieval, and also specialize in one or two media technology related topics and can choose from a wide range of elective courses. The last semester is devoted to the master’s thesis.
The program is offered in a flexible manner to fit well to all the target groups of students (full-time, part-time and distant). Prosepective distant students should note, however, that the workload is expected to be 45 hours per week during the semesters. Hence, students are not advised to sign up for full-time studies if they plan to study besides their regular job.
In general, on-campus presence is required only three weeks per semester (seminars and exams). Attendance is also strongly recommended for the initial first week of the program when preparatory courses are offered. More details for the upcoming year of study will be given here: http://www.hig.no/it/medieteknikk/studiesider_medieteknikk/mmt
All courses are available online, but there will also be on-campus sessions on a regular weekly or bi-weekly schedule.
Students can elect up to 20 ects of courses at the 3000 level as part of their master program. Students are particularly encouraged to browse the course offerings of the study programs Bachelor of Science in Game Engineering and Bachelor in Information Security.
Technical Prerequisites
Students who choose to participate in the study program on distance, need a relatively new (no more than 2-3 years old) computer and a broadband Internet connection. Software that is needed is mostly freely available on the Internet. In some courses commercial products, such as MatLab, are required.
For practical computer skills, it is expected that students can use any common operating system (MacOS, Solaris, GNU/Linux or Microsoft Windows) both with graphical user interface and a command line interface.
