Short description

The production and publishing of media today are mainly digital. Since much of the production takes place on Mac or PC, a great many have access to the same equipment and platforms as the the professional companies use. Web publishing, video editing, production of products as invitations and printed acknowledgement are aspects many have knowledge about.

There are on the other hand great redifference between knowledge about media production at home and being part of a professional productions where larger production systems are used. This is the focus of the education in Bachelor in Media Production. The students will learn how to tell stories with images, how to do sound recording in a sound studio, how video production can be much more than video recording to a videocassette, how a production can be distributed and plenty more.

Duration

Full time, underdegree, 3 year study programme giving 180 ECTS and the grade Bachelor in Media Production.

Expected learning outcomes

The study programme Bachelor in Media Production has the focus on the students acquirement of knowledge about process and production systems in different kinds of media production.

The students will on a basic level be able to carry out a concrete production of video, sound and printed matters. They will be able to develop, describe and exploit production systems for different kinds of media productions with the main focus on video and sound. The students will in the last study year deepen in fields they define themselves in the advanced courses and the main project. The students define their own approach to a problem where they go into a self-elected topic. The students have an unique possibility to specialise the study programme in wanted direction. The final goal is to educate candidates with a strong competence in digital production and distribution of media with an overall understanding for production processes, but with focus on production of different types of media elements.

Completed study programme will qualify for different types of work in:

  • publishing firm, newspapers, radio and television and graphical elements
  • web and multimedia development companies
  • other firms which work with production of media products

The study programme qualifies to admission to relevant master programmes within media subjects, and follows the international templates for three year underdegree computer science educations for the most part. The transition to foreign master programmes is therefor prepared.

Internationalization

The courses are mainly lectured in Norwegian, but with some possibilities for English in parts or whole courses.

Target Group

The target group for the study programme is primarily applicants from upper secondary school with interests for production and preparing digital media. The programme will suit both students wanting to focus on use of different technologies, students wanting to develop skills in production of sound and video, and students wanting to develop understanding for production systems in different forms of media production.

Course Structure

The study programme is built on a group of basic, compulsory courses. The students will in addition select in-depth study the last study year.

The students will go into production and publishing of sound, video, text and images in different media. The students will get an understanding and knowledge of production systems for video, sound, paper based media and web production in such a way that they can understand and participate in media production on different levels in a production chain. The students have to understand the different theory describing the structure of different media elements, systems and interaction to achieve such knowledge. The students are expected to transfer their theoretical knowledge to practical projects as well.

The students are recommended to primarily select courses in economy and marketing as electives. These courses are not mandatory in the study programme, but contains important topics important to know about to understand the alternatives in connection with planning and carrying out productions. Most students will get jobs that implies a project manager or middle manager position. Comprehension of among other factors, market an economy will then be a presumption.

The courses can be devided into two main categories. There are courses related to production and courses related to publishing. The following topics will be central in the category production:

  • Central technical and social aspects in information technology in relation with digital publishing technology
  • Insight into production of different media types that are a part of a multimedia production
  • Knowledge about production of media elements and the systems supporting the larger productions.
  • 3 dimensional objects and animations
  • Technical operational production management, planning, maintenance and calculation of digital network based production systems.

The publishing related part of the programmes courses will contain the following central topics:

  • Knowledge and skill within development and publishing of information for web
  • Experience in typgraphic design
  • Operation manners and capacities for equipment used in pre-press and press.
  • Knowledge about colour, image representation and digital image related technology
  • Human factors and end-users need and premise on design of user interface in digital media.

The students will in addition get introduced to topics of more general character such as media science and quality in the different parts of the production. The aim with these courses is to help the students develop their abilities to evaluate the production.

The evaluation methods reflects the pedagogical methods. The common evaluation methods are written exam, project work (individual and group), and essays. In addition the grading can be based on mandatory works, oral presentations and laboratory work.

The university college has up-to-date media and publishing laboratories for broadband utilisaton in production and distribution in numerous media channels. These laboratories will be used by the students when they work with compulsory courses, in-depth courses, and it is also an objective that the students will use them to explore own creativity and the equipments technical possibilities.
