Structural Design I

Expected learning outcomes

A completed course will enable the students to design simple and basic structures in concrete, steel and timber according to rules outlined in Norwegian structural design codes.

Topic(s)

Part 1: Concrete: Design principles. Limiting states. Strengths.
Slabs (plates), beams and columns.
Part 2: Steel: Beams (incl. buckling), columns subjected to both axial and lateral forces. Introduction to plastic design of beams.
Part 3: Timber: Beams (inkl. buckling) and columns subjected to both axial and lateral forces.

  • Exercises, 20 small exercises from part 2 and part 3, 10 exercises from part 1. Counts 40% of the course grade.
  • Written exam (5 hours) includes all 3 parts of the course, and counts 60% of the course grade.
  • All parts must be passed.
