One-year study programme in Information Technology - ÅIT

Short description

A one-year study programme in information technology (IT) is best suited as an introduction to further studies in informatics or computer science, or as a compliment to any other education on undergraduate level or higher. Understanding and knowledge in the field of IT will give the graduated students advantages in companies that use computers actively and will make computer supported work assignments easier and more effective.

Duration

One year, 60 ECTS

Expected learning outcomes

The students will during the one-year study programme get knowledge and skills to better understand and exploit technologies used in information and communication systems in companies, the industry, organisations and also private. The students will be able to see the opportunities in IT support and among other things be able to contribute in realising these possibilities through contribution in development projects.

Today IT support can be found in almost every company, factory, home. In this the one-year study programme the focus will be on information systems development, but you will learn to use the systems as well. After this year you will have the foundation for an IT oriented carrier.

Internationalization

A one-year study programme is not well suited for student exchange, but adjustments can be made if the student contacts the programme coordinator.

Target Group

A one-year study programme in IT will normally not be sufficient as an education on its own and should therefore be combined with a bachelor or any other education level for that matter. The study programme is also suited for those with work experience that lack computer knowledge or as a part of a skills development programme. The study programme can also be the first year of a longer IT education.

The study programme is best suited for those who

  • Are leaving the Upper Secondary School. One year with IT will never be a waste of time.
  • Are thinking of taking a degree in the IT subject area. It is a good introductory year for those who are not sure what to do and the year will be useful no matter what.
  • Have a job or an education which expects use of computer tools to perform parts of the work assignments. It will be easier to follow the fast changing and development of IT support with a deeper understanding of IT and computer tools.
  • Have just achieved an engineering degree, a bachelor degree in nursing, economics or pedagogic. It will be easier to get a good job with a combination of one of these studies.
  • Wants to take a Master in Media Technology but need more computer related courses.

The study programme will together with a bachelor degree in media design, media management, geomatics, electro or similar give the right to apply to the master programme in Media Technology.

Admission Criteria

The applicant must have Higher Education Entrance Qualification together with basic skills in mathematics (2MX/2MY/3MZ or similar). Applicants who are 25 years or older can apply if they can document prior learning and work experience. A course in 2MX will be offered before the first semester starts.

Course Structure

The combination of subjects in the study programme will give a broad and basic understanding and experience in information and communication technology. The teaching method is lecturing in class rooms, auditoriums and laboratories. The students will throughout the year of study do individual or group based practical and theoretical assignments.

The study programme will give knowledge in:

  • Developing computer software and how to take advantage of these
  • Development of web solutions and their underlying technologies and opportunities to exploit these
  • Basic mathematics to get better understanding of computer technology
  • Organisation, storage, re-allocation and presentation of information.
  • How to contribute to a development project of computer software, computer systems and web solutions.
